You now have the choice to offset the carbon emissions as a way to negate the environmental effect of your wedding.

Offsetting carbon emissions should be a tool which is used to counter environmental impact only after all other avoidance and reduction measures have been exhausted.

Companies which are carbon offset providers can provide a service where they link your emissions with an emissions abatement program such as tree planting or renewable energy projects.

Be careful when selecting an offset provider and ensure they are accredited with the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) or are certified Gold Standard. There is still a lot of work being done in this arena to ensure you ‘get what you pay for’ in terms of true offset and true benefit to the environment. The AGO is the most reliable source of information on offsetting in Australia.

Also, the type of projects which your offset money goes into is something you may like to consider. There are different opinions on this, particularly around tree planting because of its nature, it is risky and takes a longer time to act as an offset. Investing in renewable energy projects prevents greenhouse emissions, rather than curing them.

Most weddings will be in the range of 50-60 tonnes of CO2e emissions in total. An exciting factor which may lower this burden is that increasingly more venues and services are making their businesses carbon neutral, which means if you use these services, they have a net zero impact on your emissions.

If you choose to offset your wedding, there are a few methods to do so. Each wedding will vary significantly so be careful of ‘package deals’ when offsetting.

For this reason, Green Wedding Guide has developed an emissions calculator to allow you to accurately measure your wedding’s emissions based on the information you provide.

This has been developed in association with the Carbon Reduction Institute, one of the most credible and reliable carbon offset companies in Australia.

The Green Wedding Guide Calculator allows you to offset your emissions so your wedding is ‘carbon neutral’.

Offsetting, when done properly could prove to make an impact on your wedding budget, which we all know is an important factor. This is why Green Wedding Guide allows you take an accurate emissions assessment and offset a % of your emissions.

This way, you can promote your wedding as ‘low CO2’ and still educate your guests about carbon emissions and climate change.
