Every guest usually receives a small gift (aka ‘favour’ or ‘bomboniere’) from the bride and groom to thank them for sharing their special day. This is a great opportunity to do something environmental and get your message across.
You could give a small potted plant or seedling to each guest, which is a stand out environmental offering and a nice idea. However, as you are likely to have guests coming from afar, this is not necessarily going to benefit the environment. Even if the plant is native to Australia, it may not be native to a particular local habitat and could disrupt its ecosystem, or simply not survive.
Get creative and think outside the box! You could give a reusable bag to encourage people to refuse plastic bags when shopping, or what about a shower timer to save water.
Green Wedding Guide Consulting can give you many innovative and fun ideas on the types of gifts you can give to your guests, your attendants, family and each other to make the day more special and more environmental.
Gift Registry
You could consider organising a charitable donations gift registry. Charity or travel registries, while stirring up broad range of emotions can actually be an environmentally friendly option. You avoid ending up with products you don’t need and with no wrapping paper, there’s plenty of environmental savings.
Keep in mind there will be people who disagree with no matter what method you choose. Some people will be uncomfortable with being forced to give to a particular charity which they don’t feel as passionate about as you do, or if it supports a particular religion they do not follow. This is by no means a reason to abandon the idea; many will benefit from your support, just keep in mind that everyone may not agree. Try justgive.org or talk to your favourite charity about this.
A travel registry may suit you, and this can really help the cost burden of organising a wedding and a honeymoon. Your guests might enjoy the fact they have contributed to your ‘trip of a lifetime’. If you have a particular destination, why not theme the wedding around that, or name tables after places you are going to visit to make them feel involved. See Honeymoon section for more information.
